The Lens of Legacy – Celebrating Matthew Thayer’s Award-Winning Career
When you speak the name Matthew Thayer in Maui, it echoes far beyond the valley isle. With over 35 state and national awards in photography and writing, Matthew’s lens has not only captured iconic moments, but elevated them into the realm of storytelling that resonates worldwide.
One of his most defining moments came during the infamous “Miracle Landing” of Aloha Airlines Flight 243. In an act of fearless dedication, Thayer jumped an airport fence to photograph the damaged aircraft—images that would go on to land front-page features in major newspapers across the globe. For this, the Associated Press honored him with a rare commendation, and the Suburban Newspapers of America awarded him first place in Spot News Photography.
But Thayer’s brilliance isn’t confined to crisis coverage. From the dusty boots of paniolo (Hawaiian cowboys) to the graceful arcs of surfers mid-wave, Matthew has won more than 16 first-place photography awards across diverse subjects—plantation workers, sports action, and breaking news alike.
His storytelling extends to the written word as well. In 2004, the Hawaii Society of Professional Journalists recognized his gripping coverage of a mischievous monk seal nicknamed the “Big Island Bad Boy,” awarding him first place in Breaking News Reporting.
Thayer’s lens has graced the covers of the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and many others. His imagery has appeared in Newsweek, People Magazine, on book covers, music albums, and national TV. As a 25-year veteran of The Maui News and a 19-year Associated Press stringer, his work bridges local grit and global reach.
He’s also no stranger to celebrity. From the peaceful presence of George Harrison to the commanding energy of Arnold Schwarzenegger and the timeless swagger of B.B. King—Matthew has captured some of the world’s most iconic figures, always with the eye of someone who sees beyond the surface.
Matthew Thayer doesn’t just take photos. He documents truth, beauty, and the human experience with the kind of clarity that only decades of lived passion can produce.
Stay tuned as we dive deeper into Matthew’s archives, sharing the images and stories that have shaped Maui and made their mark on the world.
